How it all began...

Sparked by his love of theatre, The Durham Theatre Festival was created by
local actor/writer Michael Khashmanian. Actively involved in theatre for
almost 10 years, Michael enjoys performing on stage with several local
theatre groups and has written several plays that have received rave
reviews.
The Durham Theatre Festival showcases every aspect of theatre—venues,
theatre groups, actors, writers, producers—as well as provide newcomers
with the opportunity to showcase their talents. Michael’s vision of a
successful festival also involves boosting the local economy. “When people
go to see a show, they may also choose a local restaurant or stay in a hotel
for the night, too,” he explains.
Originally planned as a Whitby-based event, The Durham Theatre Festival
grew to include all of Durham Region as interest increased. The enthusiasm
for the Festival has even spread to local high school students, many of
whom are eager to showcase the incredible talent of Durham's youth.
After a year of brainstorming, research and planning, the third annual
Durham Theatre Festival is poised to get underway.
